- Yesterday I watched the movie "sex and city", and I am impressed with the life style of those women. All of the characters in the movie are professionals, everybody has a successful career, and it seems that everybody could get control of their own life, but nobody could affirm that they are totally happy. They are going to the parties very frequently and seeking men all the time, but nobody dare to stick to one stable relationship. Why? It's because even the coolest one is afraid of infidelity. Nearly all of the relationships end up with a break-up, and the women gradually lose their best times year after year. Though some of their dilemmas are displayed in a joking manner, a sense of sadness can be identified in the music from time to time.
They are American women. In my eyes, American women are one of the greatest women in the world. American women are among those who first started the women's movement in the world. they want to enjoy equal rights with men and never stop fighting for such a goal. In reality, If seemed that they were living in a jungle, in which love becomes something untouchable. They spend most of the time doing things for themselves. Or we can say they are living for themselves.
This movie makes me think of the modern Chinese women. Most of the Chinese women still possess a lower social position. The real reason is that they could not be set free from the identity of a wife and a mother, which can be improved by the social prejudice against women worker, the great pressure pregnant women are forced to be faced with, and the subordinate role most women play in the family.
First, most employers won't accept a woman employee when they need to make a choice between a man and a woman when both of them have the same qualifications. Boy students are more welcome than girl students when they are looking for jobs. High academic credentials are gradually devalued, especially the Master's degree. The reason is that more and more girl students choose to go to a graduate school when they finish their college years. Girls choose to study further because they are at disadvantage when compared with the boys in the job market. But when they have earned their Master's degree, things are getting worse: they have reached the age of giving birth to children. Everybody knows that bearing and rearing babies is the hardest thing to do. Especially the employers know that. From the perspective of the employers, it is easy to understand such discrimination. From the perspective of a woman, we need first to ask whether it is a contribution to the society to have a baby and get the right answer; otherwise, we never know how to face such discrimination in the job market.
Second, the already pregnant women need to face great pressure. On the one hand, they must face the danger of receiving lower income than before, or some even lose their jobs. But a new baby means more expenditure, whether it is during the pregnancy or after birth. On the other hand, a mother must back up more household work after going back from work. A mother is a house cleaner, a chef and a baby-sitter at the same time. Doing housework is the women's job in China. People have followed such a tradition for hundreds of years. Nowadays they still do. People gossiped about those who do not follow such a tradition. Even women themselves have a low opinion of those wives who are "lazier". Under such circumstances, do you still think it is easy for women to get a successful career?
Moreover, women can seldom enjoy equal status with men at home. Men make plans and decisions for the whole family. Children are educated to believe that housework is the women's job. In their spare time, men's job is to play cards or Majong and enjoy the delicious meal when their wife or mother delivers them to the table. So playing cards is a very popular game among men in China.
In general, Chinese women are mostly living for the others. It is particularly the case for those women who are housewives or who have abandoned their career for the purpose of taking care of their family. Chinese women are less active than the American women on the social stages. In addition, different from American women, Chinese women do not talk about sex because talking about sex is regarded as a shame. Chinese men love to marry a virgin, so women are looked down upon if they have ever engaged in any sexual activities before marriage. So under most circumstances the private life of Chinese women remains mysterious.
